Capi No More: William Gallas Loses Arsenal Captaincy

William Gallas is no longer Arsenal’s “Capi,” according to France Football.

Gallas publicly revealed discord in the Arsenal dressing room, outing a particular teammate by age, believed to be Robin Van Persie.  His statements were quickly distributed to media outlets worldwide.

Arsenal have appointed no replacement.  Either Manuel Almunia or Gael Clichy will wear the armband for the away match against Manchester City.  Perceived options Kolo Toure and Cesc Fabregas will not play, due to injury and suspension.

Though unfortunate, removing Gallas was the only sensible option.  His claim for captaincy took a broadside in the Birmingham match last year, one from which he never recovered.

The Frenchman severed his already strained legitimacy with his recent outburst, as captain should be the face of the club, not its whistleblower.  Even worse, his revelations confirmed his long-suspected lack of maturity, authority and leadership.

Gallas once spoke of finishing his career in France.  That may come sooner than he intended.

It’s not clear where Arsenal go from here, but with the dark cloud departing, perhaps, these players can see the light.

UPDATE: Gallas may also lose his place in the French National Team.  His soon to be released autobiography–a fascinating read I’m sure–reportedly singles out a specific player for causing dressing room trouble during France’s ill-fated Euro 2008.

Capi Caught Smoking

Authoritative Arsenal “Capi” William Gallas angered Arsene Wenger, by being photographed outside a nightclub on Wednesday with a cigarette, in blatant violation of the Arsenal fitness regime.

“He has a responsibility as captain of Arsenal Football Club,” Wenger said, “that cannot be accepted.”

Gallas has endured heavy criticism of his captaincy, stemming from a petulant on the field protest in a 2-2 draw with Birmingham that engendered a collapse costing Arsenal the title.

Wenger remains faithful to Gallas, although he hasn’t proved that he should be starting central defender this season, let alone be wearing the armband.

William Gallas Defends Himself as Arsenal Captain

Arsenal captain William Gallas hit out at the media for criticizing his captaincy.

“The controversy about my captaincy?” Gallas said, “People had to find a scapegoat as we didn’t win any trophies last season.”

“If I would have been an unworthy captain, they would have banned me.”

Be a better captain, fine.  Imbue a winning culture, sure.  What about marking someone on a set piece?
