Time to Ban Joey Barton

joey-bartonJust three matches after Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton returned from a suspension for violent conduct, he finds himself in trouble again.

Aston Villa are investigating an altercation in Monday’s match with Newcastle, following claims that Joey Barton “racially absued” Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor.  They are considering a formal complaint to the Football Association.

Barton clearly cuffed Agbonlahor in the face.  The question is whether he said something abusive, and whether Aston Villa can prove that he did so, a reason they are scouring the tapes of the incident.

The referee did not mention racist intent in the match report.  The FA will take no action, unless Villa follows through with the complaint.

Hopefully, this was a misunderstanding and a case of Barton’s past clouding his present.  However, even if there was no racism, involving himself in an incident like this so soon after his return is incredible.

Fines, suspensions, treatment programs and prison time has done nothing to reform this man’s character.  He’s insecure, immature and a menace to those around him.  He’s had many chances to behave to even the basest level of civility and failed miserably each time.  The FA don’t have the stones to do it, but it’s time to consider a permanent ban.

Tuesday Premier League Result: Newcastle Beat West Brom

Newcastle 2 – West Brom 1: It’s a sign of how far Newcastle have fallen, when they celebrate beating West Brom at home.  Joey Barton scored a penalty on his return and Obafemi Martins put through another, for a win that sends the barcodes rocketing up the table, to 15th.  Neutral hopes may be dashed, as both Tottenham and Newcastle look likely to avoid relegation.
