Former Garbage Man To Make French Debut

stevesavidanFour years ago, striker Steve Savidan was playing semiprofessional football and was supplementing his income as a garbage man.  Now, the 30-year-old should make his international debut tonight for France.

Savidan signed as a 26-year-old flameout with then third-division Valenciennes FC in 2004.  He scored 61 goals for the club over the next four seasons, spearheading back to back promotions to bring the club to Ligue 1.

The Frenchman moved to SM Caen last summer for €5 million.  He has seven goals and five assists in 14 appearances this season.

Though Savidan earned his call up, it reflects dimly on young French strikers’ not named Benzema.  Far from mere sentiment, Savidan could earn the fourth striker role behind Henry, Anelka and the aforementioned Lyon man.

Franck Ribery is Captain Obvious

French star Franck Ribery has called for Les Bleus to play more attacking football, after a lackluster start to World Cup qualification.

“What I felt during the last two matches is that we were afraid to try things,” Ribery told reporters.  “We must take risks. We’re France, we’ve got good players.  We must enjoy ourselves on the pitch.”

Ribery’s sentiment heartens French fans.  However, the manager, who subbed off Samir Nasri for a defender despite needing two goals to advance in Euro 2008 and whose future employment rests on the result, may feel differently.
