Manchester City Star Robinho Implicated in Sexual Assault

Robinho’s tenure in England keeps getting better, for those quasi-humorously writing about it.

West Yorkshire Police arrested the 25-year-old Brazilian, over allegations of “serious sexual assault” Jan. 14 at the Space nightclub in Leeds.

Robinho cooperated, and was released “pending further inquiries.”  He returned to training and was in the lineup for today’s match against Newcastle.

The arrest comes a day after Robinho returned from an unauthorized jaunt home to Brazil, for which he was fined the maximum £320,000.  His trip was not a coincidental flit of fancy.  His birthday was on Sunday.  He also had expressed frustration about City’s failure to land Kaka.

Rare for a Brazilian footballer, Robinho is known to like the ladies.  At an October 2007 party for the Brazilian National Team party, he reportedly asked a subordinate to bring him 40 condoms.  Presumably, (or hopefully) the sheaths were not entirely for his personal use.

Robinho’s involvement in the assault case is unclear.  What is clear is that, despite performing well on the pitch, 12 goals in 19 appearances, he’s not the happiest camper at Eastlands, and the club hasn’t been particularly enamored with his antics.

Unfortunately for both, he will be at City for a while.  No club, in this economic climate, will approach his £32.5m transfer fee.  No club will pay nearly £160,000 per week salary.  Such is the folly of paying top dollar.

Kaka Stays With AC Milan, Rejects Record Manchester City Bid

16578kakaIt’s not all about the Benjamins, nor, apparently, is it all about the Elizabeths.

Brazilian star Kaka rejected Manchester City’s £500,000 per week offer to stay with AC Milan, thwarting what would have been the largest transfer in the history of international football.

“After Saturday’s game many people showed me their support,” Kaka said.  “I have received drawings by kids trying to convince me to stay.  It was wonderful.  I remember when I left Sao Paolo some fans protested against me, here they all stand by my side instead.  I’m currently celebrating this decision at home with a couple of friends.”

Milan had accepted a £91m bid for the 26-year-old and allowed Manchester City to negotiate.  Despite Manchester City offering to triple his salary – he’s already currently the top-paid player in Serie A – Kaka would not agree to a transfer.

Manchester City called off the deal, convinced Kaka would not reconsider.

Stirred into a froth, Sky Blue supporters must content themselves with Craig Bellamy.

Ronaldo Will Join Brazilian Club Corinthians

Ronaldo, finally, has found a club.  The cast-aside striker signed with Brazilian side Corinthians.  It will be the first time Ronaldo plays in his home country since joining PSV as a 17-year-old.

The 32-year-old has been out nine months since rupturing a knee tendon.  He had been training with Brazilian club Flamengo to regain fitness, his A.C. Milan contract having expired last June.

Ronaldo’s move signals the likely end of his European career.  He rejected an offer from Serie-A side Siena.

Ronaldo Finished in Europe

Ronaldo, nearly recovered from a horrific knee injury for A.C. Milan eight months ago, will return to Brazil, likely to play for Flamengo, where he has been training.

“If everything is okay, I want to stay,” Ronaldo said.  “I’ve been in Europe for 16 years.  Flamengo are my favorite, but I don’t want to play there as a favor.  I want to deserve to play there.”

Ronaldo will reject an offer to join former teammate Claude Makelele in early retirement at PSG.  He had stated unilateral interest in joining Man City.

The Brazilian has played in Europe since signing for PSV Eindhoven in 1994.  He also played for Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and A.C. Milan.

He isn’t healthy.  His body would likely self-destruct after 15-20 games.  But, he scored goals when healthy at Milan.  Costing nothing, it’s hard to believe he didn’t get a better offer in Europe.
