Neven Subotic May Play for Serbia Rather than the United States

47Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has chosen his international destiny, which will be with Serbia rather than the United States, according to a report in the Serbian press.

According the report, Subotic will join the Serbian squad for their World Cup qualifying match against Romania on March 28.

Subotic, 21, played at U-17 and U-20 level for the United States before being alienated from the National Team setup.  His first choice had been to play for Germany, though FIFA negated that option because he was never a German citizen.

U.S. Soccer denied the report.  It has yet to be confirmed whether they are merely in denial.

American Skilled Imports: Neven Subotic

Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic might be a pivotal figure for the U.S. National Team at the 2010 World Cup, if he chooses to be.

Subotic, one of the best young defenders in Germany, has size (6’4”) and skill to match.  He played for the United States at U-17 level, but has evaded the U.S. setup after Thomas Rongen left him off the U.S. squad for the 2007 U-20 World Cup.

Because of his complicated nationality, he has yet to choose a senior national team.  He is eligible for Serbia (his parents’ nationality), Bosnia (the country of his birth) or the United States, where he spent his teenage years.

His first choice appeared to be Germany, where he spent his childhood, before discovering he was ineligible.  Subotic must choose a designation by his 21st birthday in Dec. 2009 and will pick a nationality after this season.  He would likely make the starting XI for any of the three countries, although his best chance for South Africa would be with the U.S.
