Gigi Buffon May Join Manchester City in €75m Deal

p1_buffon_0926According to the Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester City offered Juventus €75m for goalkeeper Gigi Buffon.  If consummated the deal would equal the world record fee paid to Juventus by Real Madrid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

Manchester City would also offer Buffon a five-year €75m contract, making him the highest paid player in the world.

“If I leave Turin, I’m going abroad and for a fantastic sum,” Buffon said in a video chat on Monday.

Though Buffon may be the best keeper in the world and loves Juventus, both club and player would have difficult turning down the money.

Juve dimmed a bit with lost finances stemming from demotion and two years out of the Champions League.  Their rumored long-term replacement, Udinese’s 24-year-old keeper Samir Handanovic, may cost €20m.  That would still leave Juventus €55m to play with in a buyers’ market, given the current financial crisis.

He may be the best in the world at his position, but the loss of a goalkeeper would affect the team far less than another position.

Sentiment may tie Buffon to Turin, but money is normally decisive and €75m is a lot of it.

UPDATE: Juve manager Claudio Ranieri dismissed reports of a Buffon transfer.
